Consists of correspondence, memos, and reports of the Louisiana Historical Records Survey (1935-1943) and the Survey of Federal Archives in Louisiana (1936), and materials pertaining to specific aspects of these projects. Included in these materials are manuals, instructions and guidelines, inventories, notes, drafts, and worksheets for the Colonial Records of Louisiana Feliciana Archives, Church Archives Inventory, Manuscripts Inventory, Police Jury Minutes, and Vital Statistics Inventory projects (all directed by the Louisiana Historical Records Survey), and similar documents relating to various Survey of Federal Archives in Louisiana transcription projects.

The Historical Records Survey (HRS) had its origins in the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Civil Works Administration. In 1935 it came under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project and eventually was designated as an independent program under Federal Project No. One.
